Our coaches bring many years experience as well as professional credentials to the program.  Whichever program you select will be under the guidance of coaches adept at explaining and demonstrating the techniques necessary to enable you to succeed.

Our Instructors

John McDougall

Fencing master John McDougall is the Emeritus  instructor for the Ashland YMCA program. John is certified by the International Fencing Association (FIE) and the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) as a master instructor of foil, epee and saber. He has extensive experience teaching both children and adults, including atprivate studios in Oregon and California and at the University of California (Santa Cruz and Berkeley), Stanford University and Southern Oregon University.

Bruno Goossens

1998 World Masters Epee Champion Bruno Goossens teaches epee and foil in our Advanced Competitive Fencing program. Formerly on the French Modern Pentathlon National Junior team and a former California and Oregon state epee champion, Bruno has fenced for more than 40 years and taught for 12 years. He has been a top-rated national and international epee referee for more than 10 years and is a nationally rated foil referee. Bruno recently placed third in his age group in a U.S. national epee tournament.

Ronald Kilby

Ron Kilby teaches introductory, intermediate and competitive fencing classes. He is certified by the United States Fencing Association (USFA) and the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) as a fencing coach in foil, epee and saber.  He is a USFA referee.  His personal experience began some 30 years ago studying saber in Germany and includes recent specialized coaches training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Ron’s students have won regional tournaments in both classical and modern competition. His coaching technique emphasizes competitive tactics and the psychology of the sport. He is a partner in Southern Oregon Fencing Center LLC.

Dylan Shelton

Dylan Shelton teaches introductory and novice fencing classes for both the Medford and Ashland programs. A long-time student of the classical sport and related weapons, Dylan is one of the finest classical foil fencers in the western United States

Steve Wesche

Steve Wesche is the partner in Southern Oregon Fencing Center, LLC who handles scheduling, business matters and many of the fencing program’s odds and ends. He came to the sport several years ago due to his daughter’s participation; when time permits, he fences foil and epee. Steve is a retired U.S. diplomat who served primarily in Washington and Latin America.

Wesley Coffel

Wesley Coffel is a competitive fencer who has been fencing from the age of 11. He teaches the Electric Foil and Electric Epee classes as well Novice Foil.  He has been to many tournaments as well a several national events. Wes's instruction mainly focuses on current competitive fencing, and is available for private lessons. Wes is currently enrolled as a student at SOU majoring in physics.

Southern Oregon Fencing Center

The Southern Oregon Fencing Center is open to all men, women, girls and boys who are interested in learning the sport of fencing and improving their skill levels. We are a community of fencers dedicated to working together to learn and play this fascinating martial art. New members of all ages, including absolute beginners, are welcomed and will receive classical training and assistance from our internationally certified instructors and our more experienced fencers. .
